[01] About the project

A conventional concrete bridge of real length needs piers, and piers in a river or canal mean foundations, cofferdams and time. On this package of major bridges near Phaltan, RKC used Ultra-High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) to cross in a single span of 102.6 m.

The package covers 15 major bridge structures in Maharashtra and was completed in 2024.

What UHPFRC changes

UHPFRC is a dense concrete reinforced with fine steel fibres. Its strength in compression, and its resistance to cracking, are several times those of ordinary structural concrete. That lets a girder be slimmer and lighter for the same load, and lets one span reach where two or three would otherwise be needed.

Fewer supports in the water means less work in the channel, a shorter programme on site and a structure that is more durable over its life.

Precast, then placed

The bridges were built with precast technology implemented in collaboration with Malaysia. Segments were cast under controlled conditions, then brought to the crossing and assembled, keeping the quality of the concrete high and the time spent over the water short.
